Absolutely Shameful January 18, 2006

These athletes are an embarassment to our country. Perhaps they shouldn’t even carry the flag on their clothing:

Most of the top candidates to carry Canada’s flag in the opening ceremonies at the 2006 Turin Olympics — including cross-country skier Beckie Scott and speed skaters Clara Hughes and Cindy Klassen — declined to be nominated for the honour so they can focus on their events.

The excuses are pretty lame.

Good old Don Cherry chimes in on this whole flag flap.

Hockey commentator Don Cherry doesn’t agree. During a separate CBC Newsworld interview, he criticized athletes who decline to make themselves available as flag-bearer.

“The thing is, they don’t care,” he said. “That nonsense about getting prepared – how long does it take? A little walk around.

“Come out and say you don’t care … but don’t say `It will upset my performance.’ That’s ridiculous.”

“They’re asking the wrong people,” Cherry added. “There’s lots of people, I’m sure, who’d love to carry the flag in.”

No way should he have to apologize to anyone for these comments.

UPDATE:  Actually after watching the TSN report about it, I’m beginning to see the other side to not carrying the flag.  But I still think it’s shameful.  These are the Olympics.  This is a time for all of us to be proud of our country.  To hear people say they don’t want to carry our flag makes me a little angry.

Yah, I heard an athlete talking about that on the news this morning. He said that when he carried the flag, his oponent (who did NOT carry a flag) got more practice time. Apparently, the demand on a flag bearer is pretty great. I mean, athletes ARE there representing the country, but let’s face it, they are they to win medals! I can totally see why an athlete would not want to be on the list.
